Now, Jaya wants ED chief reinstated
The BJP breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as no announcement of withdrawal of support came today from J Jayalalitha. But the AIADMK chief kept up the pressure by writing to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to demand the cancellation of the transfers of 17 top officials, including former Enforcement Director M K Bezbaruah and Revenue Secretary N K Singh.
Oppn parties unite on Srikrishna
In what is being seen as the first serious unity move in the Opposition, nine parties have formally joined hands against the BJP-led government using the Srikrishna Commission report to hit out at the Centre. The parties are: the Congress, CPM, SP, RJD, National Conference, SJP(R), Janata Party, Muslim League, RPI and Independent Buta Singh.
Govt to shut down nine PSUs
Union industry minister Sikander Bakht said on Sunday that the government would close down nine sick public sector undertakings this year as part of its policy to close non-revivable units. He added that government would not be disinvesting in any unit other than the four mentioned in the budget - Container Corporation (Concor), Gail, VSNL and IOC.
