England down Lanka
England medium-pace bowlers, Darren Gough and Peter Martin wiped out the Sri Lankan top order to guide their team to a 36-run victory in the Triangular One-Day International series at Lords yesterday. Earlier, Graeme Hick struck a powerful 86 from 97 balls as England scored 247.

Sampras douses Larsson's resolve
Pete Sampras overcame a determined attack by Sweden's Magnus Larsson last night to reach the ATP championship final for the second consecutive year. Sampras celebrated a hard-fought, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory in the 1-hour, 34-minute match by raising his arms to the cheers of the crowd.

WI upbeat on series against SA
West Indies cricket selectors chairman Mike Findlay has said his team's success against England four months ago should give it confidence ahead of a winter tour of South Africa. The West Indies will compete in the ICC Knock-out Tournament in Bangladesh in late October before beginning their five-Test tour of South Africa on Nov 10.
