Zeba, Riyad bag double; Avinash adjudged best

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Aug 17: The dominance of the Greater Mumbai swimmers was finally asserted. On the conclusion of the 61st State Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior Aquatics championships they surpassed the four digit mark to log 1002 points and bag the general championship.

However, if it was a collective triumph for Greater Mumbai, it was a golden moment for 12-year-old Avinash Kriplani (Greater Mumbai) who not only bagged the individual title in Group-III, but was conferred the title of `Best Swimmer' leaving him the recipient of the Late Ganjawalla Trophy.

Avinash who held centre-stage for the past three days re-writing records, today failed to bring out the same performance. The only event which he took part, the 50m free-style, he finished with a silver, conceding gold to Parikshit Shetty (GMA) who logged a new state record of 0:28.02. The record thus erased the 1991 record set by Shane Pedder (GMA) who registered 0:28.16.Likewise, bespectacled Zeba Wadia of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) achieved a rare`double' claiming individual honours in the women's and Group-I. Likewise Riyad Palia made it a double strike winning honours in both men and the Group-II section.
