KOYNANAGAR (SATARA DISTRICT), Aug 17: Prakruti ki supta shaktiyon ko samaj ki unnati ke karya main lagakar ujjwal bhavishya ki asha darshanewale manav prayatno ka yeh sakar pratik hain, (This is a standing monument to human endeavours to create a bright future by using the hidden strengths of Mother Nature to uplift the human race) wrote Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru after visiting Koyna on April 14, 1960.Three-and-a-half decades later, a garden has been created to commemorate Pandit Nehru's visit to Koyna -- the power-house of Maharashtra. Named after Panditji, the garden, overlooking the mighty 98,000 million cubic tmc ft capacity Shivsagar, is dedicated to his policy of Panchsheel.
The Nehru Memorial Garden is spread over six acres at a place where once stood a matching plant and ice mixers for the dam.
Rosaries, lush green lawns, expanses of ornamental plants, beautifully built artificial waterfalls, and a specially created children's park adorn the garden which will soon be thrown open totourists visiting Koyna, project chief engineer S N Huddar said.
As a matter of pride for the chief engineer, the entire garden-scaping for the memorial has been done by the designers at Koyna project office. ``We had a definite garden concept in mind,'' Huddar said. The garden giving a bird's eye view of the dam and the beautiful reservoir behind, would be surrounded by mango and cashew orchards. This would also check soil erosion.
