Students divided over Kapadia's suspension

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Aug 17: Even as the state government cancelled the suspension orders of former South Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Ashwin Kapadia and accepted his resignation from office, a section of students and teachers of SGU-affiliated colleges are divided over the issue of Kapadia's suspension.

Speaking at a meeting, held to protest against Kapadia's suspension, speakers questioned the circumstances under which the suspension orders were passed and called for another agitation to reinstate Kapadia as the V-C. The meeting, comprising educationists, students and professors, was held at the P T Science College hall on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, student leaders of different colleges affiliated to the SGU and owing allegiance to the National Students' Union of India burnt effigies of Kapadia and Dr Swaroop, a fake sexologist from Ahmedabad. Swaroop was nabbed some time ago and is reported to have procured certificates from the same Sri Lankan university as Kapadia. While a section of the students and others led by Senate member Hoshang Mirza are celebrating Kapadia's removal, others including the university non-teaching staff have pledged to support the agitation for his reinstatement as the V-C.

As of now, though his suspension orders stand cancelled as his resignation has been accepted, educational activity and administrative work has been affected.

Talking to Express Newsline, Mirza said it was obvious that when his resignation was accepted, it meant that the suspension orders stood revoked. ``The inquiry is still pending and if the fake sexologist could be punished for procuring a false certificate, the same logic should be extended in Kapadia's case,'' he stated, adding that it was established that both had secured their degrees from the same university.

Among others, Hakumat Desai, SGCCI president Rajendra Chokhawala, principals of a number of SGU-affiliated colleges and students attended the meeting.
