Teachers' associations to continue with agitation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Aug 17: Both the teachers' associations of colleges affiliated to the South Gujarat University (SGU), who have been on an indefinite strike since August 15, have pledged their support to the nationwide stir for pay-hike and have stated that it would be called off only after the University Grants Commission (UGC) recommendations were implemented.

In separate statements issued today by the South Gujarat College and University Teachers' Association (SGCUTA) and the South Gujarat University Teachers' Association (SOGUTA), the leaders stated that the UGC's recommendations for pay revision should be accepted by the government.

Meetings were held by both associations in the city today. Meanwhile, teaching in all colleges of the city remained affected for the second week with teachers boycotting classes.

In a related development, teachers and professors of Centrally governed colleges like the Gandhi Engineering College as well as regional colleges like the SVR Engineering college have joined the stir. A statement issued here by the teachers said they had pledged support to show solidarity with the agitating teachers.

These teachers had not joined the stir earlier as the UGC recommendations were already applicable in their colleges.

Nishith Desai, a prominent labour union leader, and others, while stating that the strike was absolutely justified, have also extended their support to the agitating teachers.

The general body meeting of SOGUTA was held here today and Prof Jaganath Pathy spoke on the issues confronting higher education in India. The general body meeting also welcomed the withdrawal of suspension orders of Ashwin Kapadia, who resigned as the Vice-Chancellor last week.
