SHIMLA, Aug 17: Hooliganism and an aborted group clash between rival students factions marred the fashion show of the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD) at the Himachal Pradesh University auditorium last night. If earlier it was the ABVP which tried to create problems in holding of the show, later the NUSI activists came to blows with the organisers in the auditorium when the show had already started. It was the timely intervention of the police, which was deployed in full strength around the venue, that saved the situation from deteriorating.
The terrified organisers had no option but to call off the show after five rounds, in which top models like Shaweta Menon, Karminder Kaur, Jaspreet, Mrinalini, Seitu Kumar and Anchal besides the lone male model Viky participated. The ABVP was opposed to the show terming it a display of nudity.
Horticulture Minister Narinder Bargta who was the chief guest, himself left the function midway to attend some other official engagement. In his brief speech, Bragta also counselled the organisers to avoid displaying any odd outfits, which did not fit into the Indian culture.
He toed the line adopted by ABVP activists and said the purpose of the show should be promote only the academic aspect of the fashion designing and promote Himachal culture and attires. He arrived late at the function and took a lot of time to negotiate with ABVP activists on allowing the fashion show to go on as per schedule.
Later, as the show progressed, the NUSI activists present in full strength in the hall, clashed with the organisers and a scuffle was averted. Tension prevailed in the auditorium for few minutes and the show was stooped. Intervention of the police helped to restore order but the organisers called off the show after one round.
