BEST power for Ganesh festival

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST) has made arrangements to provide electric supply to public (sarvajanik) organisations for the forthcoming Ganesh festival.

The BEST has appealed to organisers to submit their requisitions for obtaining power supply in advance to enable processing of papers. A standard form, which is available at the BEST's commercial divisions at Colaba and Dadar, is to be filled in for the purpose. A special counter will be kept open till August 25 for giving connections for the festival at the divisional offices.

Revised wages for seamen

More than 30,000 Indian seamen serving on foreign-going vessels will benefit from a National Maritime Board (NMB) agreement covering upward revision of wages and working conditions on board. Under the terms of the agreement, the average increase in wages works out to around Rs 2,600 per month, and there are other benefits like pension and disability compensation.

Secretarygeneral of The National Union of Seafarers of India, Dr Leo Barnes, said an agreement to this effect was signed by Capt A P Kothurkar, representative of the shipowners, and M T Joseph, representative of seafarers. The agreement extends from April 1, 1998 to March 31, 2000.

Computer literacy classes

The Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Queen's Necklace has started a computer literacy programme at Dr Ambedkar Municipal School, BDD Chawl, Worli.The club has so far trained six teachers of the school and is imparting computer education to children of standard eight and nine. A similar programme has also been started at Modern School, C P Tank.

Website on Zoroastrianism

A site on Zoroastrianism, `Error! Bookmark not defined' will be launched on the Internet on August 20. The site will contain material on the Zoroastrian religion, as well as a news section, classified ads and links to other Zoroastrian sites. It will have information about agiaries, trusts and other Parsi organisations.
