Wins for Sunny, Kamal

CHANDIGARH, Aug 18: Sunny Bhalla outclassed Krishan Kumar in straight frames 79-42, 75-26 to move into the next round of the S Jaswant Singh Bhullar Memorial prize money snooker tournament here today.

In another match, Kamal Kant beat Amardeep Singh 2-1. After 1-1 each, Kamal Kant took the third frame (73-23) to wrap up the contest.

Football meet today
Twenty-four teams will vie for top honours in the Chandigarh cadet (under-14) football championship for the St John's Trophy, which begins tomorrow at the Football Coaching Centre, Sector 23.

The participating teams have been divided into four pools. The opening match will be played between Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 and Bloom Model High School, Sector 21 at 4 p.m., while Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37 will take on Government High School, Sector 26, in the second match of the day.

Campus trials
Sports persons, who were unable to appear on July 21, 1998, for the trials conducted by the Punjab University Campus to fill the sports quota seats in various departments for the academic session 1998-99, would be given another chance.

According to Reet Mahinder Singh, Deputy Director Physical Education, PU Campus, the trials will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m., at the PU Campus ground.

The candidates would be allotted seats only if there is a vacancy in a particular department.

Ludhiana hockey
The Aryan Hockey Club will organise the Ludhiana District schools hockey league from September 5 at Ludhiana, according to the club president Sukhvir Singh Grewal.

Kila Raipur Senior Secondary School, Malwa School, Roomi School, Jarkhar School, Namdhari Jatha, Bahadurgarh School, Kamalpura School and Raikot School will take part in the tournament, matches of which will be played only on weekends.

After the district league, the Punjab State Super League for Harbans Singh Pannu Memorial Cup will be held in the first week of October. The district league champions will qualify for the championship alongwith SPDA (Patiala), Sports School (Jalandhar), Burlton Park Hockey Academy (Jalandhar), Shivalik Academy (Chandigarh) among others.

Meanwhile, Kulwant Singh Boparai was elected as the general secretary of the club by the general house.

Weight-lifting trials
Patiala: Trials to select the Punjab (men and women) weight-lifting teams, to participate in the fifth National Games at Manipur in October will be held at the Weight-lifting Club, Rakhbagh, Ludhiana on August 30, according to Dr D S Virk, hony secretary of the Punjab Weight Lifting Asociation.

Power-lifting squad
The Punjab power-lifting (men and women) teams for the Senior National Power-lifting championship to be held in Hyderabad from August 24 to 28, were announced here today.

Men: Rashpal Singh (captain), Sushil Kumar (vice captain), Balwinder Singh, Ashok Kapoor, Jaspal Singh, Vicky, Om Parkash (all PSEB), Manpreet Sandhu (Kapurthala), Pardeep Babbal (Jalandhar), Jaswant Singh (Fatehgarh Sahib) and Vinod Kumar (Patiala).
Reserves: Neeraj Giri Goswami and Gurinder Singh.
Women: Narinder Kaur (captain), Amrit Kaur, Kalpana (Patiala), Mandeep Kaur, Babita, Rajbir Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur, Manmohan Kaur (Bhatinda), Satnam Kaur, Karampal Kaur, Usha Chadha (PSEB).
Reserve: Ramandeep Kaur and Suneeta.
