Ashwin Kapadia's supporters plan to move court

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Aug 18: In a significant move, some senior citizens of the city are planning to file a contempt of court case against the state government for suspending former vice-chancellor Ashwin Kapadia and subsequently accepting his resignation.

A committee, formed on Sunday to support Kapadia, said the government's action was ``legally untenable.'' Committee member, Sunil Bhukhanwala said the government's action first it suspended Kapadia, later withdrew the suspension order and accepted his resignation -- ``belittles the prestige of such high academic institution.''

The committee, comprising Syndicate member Sunil Modi, president of the Productivity Council Rupin Patchhigar, Dilip Marfatia, professor Ashok Desai and advocate Sunil Bhukhanwala, feels that government action is a fit case to be challenged in the court of law.

Marfatia, while pointing out that the issue of Kapadia's degree and his daughter's dissertation was pending in the court of law, questioned as to how could the government suspend the V-C on an issue which was subjudice.

Besides filing a case against the government, the committee will also make a representation to the government, the chief minister and the education minister requesting to reconsider its decision and reinstate Kapadia.
