ED chief's transfer: SC seeks `facts'
The controversy over the transfer of Enforcement Directorate chief M.K. Bezbaruah took a new turn today when the Supreme Court asked the government to file an affidavit stating the "full facts" of the transfer by August 26. Refusing to order status quo, it expressed its "distress" over the move and made it clear that even if the transfer is effected before September 8, the next date of hearing, "it shall be subject to further orders of the court".

Hillary stands by Bill Clinton
In her moment of public humiliation, First Lady Hillary Clinton oversaw President Clinton's legal and political strategy and even helped craft his address to the nation, prominent US media outlets reported today. Although she was not seen publicly throughout the day, several commentators said she was very much in the thick of the battle. Mrs Clinton is herself an acclaimed attorney and in the eyes of her admirers, probably the savviest lawyer in town.

180 killed in UP landslides
At least 180 people, including the entire 12th batch of 60 pilgrims on its way to Kailash-Mansarovar and eight personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), are feared killed in a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains that started at about 12.30 a.m., sweeping off the entire Malpa village in Pithoragarh.

Protima Bedi feared killed
Protima Gauri Bedi, famous Odissi dancer, was among the pilgrims feared killed in the Kailash Mansarovar tragedy.
