No respite: `Diehard' Starr to persist with Clinton witchhunt
American President Bill Clinton's worries may be far from over. Despite his wrenching admission of adultery and deceit in an unprecedented nationally televised address, his angry defiance of what he clearly feels is a political witchhunt by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr has set the stage for more unseemly drama that has already sapped the nation for several months and provided a lurid spectacle worldwide.

Landslide flattens UP village, 178 feared dead
At least 178 people, including the entire 12th batch of 60 pilgrims on its way to Kailash-Mansarovar and eight personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), are feared killed in a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains that started at about 12.30 a.m, yesterday, sweeping off the entire Malpa village in Pithoragarh district bordering China and Nepal. Noted danseuse Protima G Bedi, who was among the pilgrims, is also feared killed in the landslide.

Court can't force bail after acquittal: HC
In a landmark judgment, a Full Bench of Gujarat High Court has held that a trial court, while acquitting an accused, cannot ask him or her to furnish bail. A Gujarat High Court Division Bench earlier had held that at a time when accused are released on bail, pending investigation or trial, the bail should be furnished for at least one year, even after their acquittal.
