Angry Monica testifies before Grand Jury again

Chidanand Rajghatta
WASHINGTON, AUG 20: The Bard said it a long time ago: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Smarting from President Bill Clinton's television address in which he spared no thought for what she has been through, former White House intern Monica Lewinsky was testifying again before the Grand Jury on Thursday, adding to an account in which she has already contradicted his version of the sexual liaison between them.

Washington is aflame with stories of how angry and hurt the young former intern is with President Clinton's mea culpa, which, besides admitting an affair with her, did not as much as acknowledge the traumatic seven months she has undergone or apologised to her and her family.

Although she has not spoken publicly nor was seen during and after Clinton's address, accounts in the local media attributed it to ``a person familiar with her situation,'' and said Lewinsky felt Clinton's statement appeared to disparage their relationship as a ``mere series of trysts, with no recognition of thegifts and frequent telephone calls that indicated a deeper 18-month relationship.''

Speculation was that even if the President did want to speak of her pain, he would have found it difficult to get it past the First Lady, who is believed to have cased the speech.

Lewinsky went into the Grand Jury on Thursday morning certain to be questioned in greater details about the kind of sexual contact she and the President had. According to leaked reports about the President's testimony on Monday, while he acknowledged that Lewinsky had performed oral sex on him, he did not say whether and if he was an active partner. Lewinsky, in her previous testimony, has contradicted him, saying he was very much an active partner in their months of oral, manual and phone sex.

The President was specifically asked at Monday's questioning whether he had performed certain sex acts on her but he declined to answer the questions, accounts said. According to earlier versions, when Monica was asked if the President had performed suchacts on her, she is said to have told the prosecutors she did not understand the word they used to describe the acts. Lewinsky and Clinton have also provided differing versions on how she came to return the gifts he gave her back to the White House, contradictions that may lead to conclusions about obstruction of justice.

Starr prosecutors are expected to nail these contradictions before the Independent Counsel sends an impeachment report to the Congress. Clinton's personal secretary Bettie Currie, who has already testified five times, is expected to be recalled before the Grand Jury. There is also speculation that Clinton himself may be subpoenaed.

That Starr is determined to pursue this matter to its end was evident on Wednesday when it transpired that he had sought a DNA sample from the President to compare with the semen strains found on Lewinsky's dress. The White House has reportedly complied with the request.

The President meanwhile spend a subdued 52nd birthday with his family and close friendsVernon Jordan and his wife Ann at Martha's Vineyard, a holiday resort for the rich and famous. Jordan, a Washington powerbroker and a lawyer, is a long time Clinton confidante whom the President turns to in times of need or despair. Jordan tried to help Lewinsky find a job after her stint at the White House, a matter that is also under Starr's investigation.

Although they are often described as some kind of locker-room buddies, it is unlikely Clinton and Jordan would have discussed the Lewinsky matter with the First Lady in attendance.

``I am not aware that they had any long conversations. But the President will enjoy spending this time with his friend on this birthday,'' White House press secretary Mike McCurry said.

McCurry also dismissed calls for Clinton's resignation, saying the ``President is confident that he enjoys the trust of the American people who elected him and he will continue to do the work he was elected to do.''

Gregarious and personable, Clinton usually has rousing birthday parties, and the family's annual getaway to Martha's Vineyard is a particularly sociable event. The resort is a hangout for the illuminati, with novelist William Styron and cartoonist Jules Feiffer owning digs there. But evidently the Clintons are forsaking all company to handle the healing on their own.
