CHENNAI, AUG 20: There is no direct evidence of foreign funding to the Muslim fundamentalists in the State, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police F C Sharma revealed on Wednesday.Talking to mediapersons here, he said that the Muslim fundamentalists' source of money was local sympathisers and beneficiaries. Besides, they also got money by settling civil disputes in villages. ``Till now we have not got any evidence of foreign funding to the fundamentalists,'' he said before adding that ``there is no direct involvement of ISI in the cases''.
The DGP pointed out that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will file the preliminary chargesheet in the Coimbatore blast case by September end. Till now, 149 persons have been arrested and a vigorous drive is on to nab the other accused. ``We have already identified the source of explosives which is mainly from Mysore and Kerala''. Al-Umma chief Kovai Batcha has been charged in four cases - Salaimangalam blast, Coimbatore blast and two blast cases in Chennai. Theseven bomb manufacturing places in Coimbatore have been unearthed and the vehicles used for transportation of the explosives seized.
The DGP said that the SIT had chargesheeted two more cases on Wednesday against the Muslim fundamentalists bringing the total number of chargesheeted cases to nine against a total of 77 accused including the case relating to Prof K P Paramasivam's murder in Madurai.
In the case relating to the bomb attack on Vepery police station at Chennai in December 1997, Islamic Defence Force (IDF) president Erwadi Kasim and his accomplice Ayub have been charged. They had attacked the police station in protest against the killing of Muslims at Coimbatore. The chargesheet has been laid in the Court of the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, under Section 3 of the Explosives Substances Act, 1908.
In the case relating to seizure of explosive substances from Erwadi Kasim's house at VOC Nagar, Pulianthope in March 1998, the chargesheet has been laid in the Court of the 10th MetropolitanMagistrate, Egmore against Erwadi Kasim and Ayub.
Six persons were arrested and chargesheet laid in the case relating to the murder of Prof Paramasivam, an executive committee member of the ABVP in Madurai in March 1998.
The other fundamentalists cases chargesheeted by SIT are Saliamangalam bomb blast case (chargesheet against nine accused including S A Batcha), the train bomb blast case (chargesheet against nine accused including Jihad Committee president Kunnankudi Haniffa), the bomb blast at film director Mani Ratnam's residence (chargesheet against four persons) and Imam murder case in K K Nagar, Chennai (chargesheet against five accused). Over 2,000 witness have been examined so far.
Regarding the Vinayaka Chaturti celebrations, the DGP said a strict vigil will be maintained in all the districts. The SPs have been ordered to ensure proper bandobust. The field level officers have been ordered to interact with all parties and there shall be no deviation from the traditional way of celebratingVinayaka Chaturti.
He added that operations against sandalwood smuggler Veerappan was on in full swing and he would be nabbed soon. Regarding the murder of MDMK functionary Palanivel at Chidambaram, he said that the police had identified 12 persons including Vandaiyar brothers suspected to be involved in the murder.
