Colleges to launch `students' parliament'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, AUGUST 20: Fourteen city colleges plan to soon launch a `Students Parliament' to train students in leadership, working of parliamentary systems and raise political awareness.

The programme, part of `Vox Pupili' (Voice of Students) movement sponsored by India-First Foundation and the 14 colleges, was delayed due to the ongoing teachers' strike, stated Sudarshan Arya, the programme coordinator.

The colleges include Lala Lajpatrai College, Narsee Monjee, Ruia, Maharshi Dayanand, Sophia, Guru Nanak, Government Law, MP Sanghavi , Kandivli Education Society, MMK, SNDT Arts and Commerce, H Somani, Burhani and Khalsa. Arya said the proposal came up after the Centre lowered the age limit for becoming Member of Parliament from 25 to 21 years.

The sponsoring principals will bring in at least 50 students from their colleges. The combined strength of all the students joining Vox Pupili will then float their own parties, elect student MPs and even form a government, said Principal Dr Gurnam Singh of GuruNanak College, Koliwada.

Principal M G Shirahatti from Lala Lajpatrai college, Haji Ali, said the Students Parliament will discuss issues connected with students, education, employment, etc and adopt bills on these subjects. It will also reflect its views on what is happening in the parliament at Delhi. These student MPs will know all about the constitution, rights and duties, parliamentary system of government etc. Both experts and some prominent political personalities will be invited in to guide the students. The parliament will hold about six sessions, each in a different college.
