Majid may be forced to quit

Shahid Ahmed Khan
ISLAMABAD, August 20: The controversy surrounding the appointment of Aamir Sohail as captain of Pakistan cricket team has not yet died down and it is likely to cost the Chief Executive of the Board (PCB), Majid Khan, his job.

PCB chairman, Khalid Mahmood, and some other members of the Board's executive council are likely to convene an emergency meeting of the Board's supreme body to consider disciplinary action against Majid Khan for his comments against the appointment of Aamir Sohail in the media.

Newspaper reports said PCB's executive council meeting will be convened shortly to take up the issue after Sohail himself drew attention of the PCB chairman towards the issue.

``If players can be held responsible for violating the code, why can't action be taken against officials,'' an official of the board was quoted as saying.

A leading daily had earlier quoted Majid Khan as criticising the appointment of Sohail, saying, ``I did not support him as captain because of his behavior. He has violated the codeof conduct on a number of occasions and in my view an indisciplined cricketer does not deserve to get the captaincy.''

``I was disappointed that he even misbehaved with me. If a player can't respect the chief executive whom will he respect,'' he said.

There was a raging war of words between Sohail and Majid and last year the latter had Aamir suspended for two years for making allegations of match-fixing and betting against some teammates. But the suspension was withdrawn after Khalid Mahmood took over as the new chairman of the Board. Meanwhile, Majid made a demand that parliament should pass laws envisaging strict action against players involved in betting and match-fixing while conceding before a parliamentary probe committee that some players were involved in match-fixing.

``PCB has no legal powers to check match-fixing and the only way out is not to select suspect players for any future tour,'' the former cricketer told the national assembly's standing committee on sports which is investigatingmatch-fixing allegations.

Majid also expressed Board's helplessness in exercising the option of dropping a player as pressures from public and the media forces the Board to re-induct those dropped.

Incidentally early this year, former skipper Wasim Akram under allegations of involvement in the match-fixing racket had been dropped from the South African tour but was later sent following intervention by the new chairman of PCB.

Majid also told the committee that a PCB probe had found some players of the team ``deeply involved'' in rigging.

It was also reported in the media that Majid was contemplating resigning from the post of chief executive following the controversy over match-fixing and also the appointment of Sohail as skipper against his wishes.
