Janhavi pips Shalmali for title

MUMBAI, AUGUST 20: Janhavi Deshpande lifted the Ghatkopar YMCA table tennis women's singles title today with a hard-fought 6-21, 21-18, 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 win over Shalmali Mhatre in the final.

Shalmali Inamdar grabbed top honours in the girls final, depriving Janhavi Desphande of a double with a 21-19, 21-13, 19-21, 21-23, 21-16.

Shalmali Inamdar clinched a thrilling junior girls final when she beat Janhavi Desphande 21-19, 21-13, 19-21, 21-23, 21-16 late last night.

Women's Singles (semi-finals): Shalmali Mhatre bt Rujuta Rege 21-14, 22-24 21-9, 21-14; Janhavi Deshpande bt Bhuvana Suvarna 21-8 21-10 21-7

Bozorgi strikes

Jer Baug beat Bharucha Baug `B' 1-0 to make the quarter-finals of the Nowroz Baug Sports Club football tournament at the Nowroz Baug Colony Ground, today.

Kiorash Bozorgi scored the all-important goal.

MCC, HR still lead

Mulund College of Commerce and HR continue to be joint leaders after three rounds of the Inter-Collegiate team chess tournament being held at the Somani College, Chowpatty.

After today's results, MCC and HR have 8.5 points each with Podar following at second spot with eight. Vivekanand are on third spot with seven.

A Vartak (3.5) lost to Vivekanand (7) 1.5-2.5; HR Comm (8.5) bt Ruparel (3.5) 4-0; MCC (8.5) drew with Podar (8) 2-2; CHM (5.5) lost to Gonsalo (3.5) 1-3.

Sydenham in final

Sydenham beat defending champions Jai Hind in the semi-finals of the Inter-Collegiate table tennis tournament at the University Pavilion today.

Sydenham will now play RA Podar in the final. In the women's section, RA Podar will play RD National.

Men's Singles (semifinals): Sydenham bt Jai Hind 3-1 (Trilok Prabhune bt Kunal Shah 21-8, 21-17, Ajay Dhere lost to Mushir Ulde 21-19,21-12). RA Podar bt Mulund Com 3-0 (Gaurav Menon bt Ashwin Krishna 21-14, 21-14, Neville Irani bt Siddarth S 21-18, 21-5, Sachin Patwardhan bt S Rabade 21-14, 21-14.

Quarter-finals: Mulund bt Lala Lajpatrai 3-0, Jai Hind bt Mithibai 3-1, RA Podar bt Bharatiya Vidhyapeeth 3-0, Sydenham bt MMK 3-0.

Women Singles (semifinals): RA Podar bt VG Vaze 3-1, RD National bt Sophia 3-1.

Packers prevail

Bandra Packers beat Chembur English 2-0 in a MDFA Harwood League football match at the St Xavier's Ground, Parel, today.

After stepping up pressure in the second half, Packers drew first blood when Pascol Koli dribbled his way past two defenders and beat goalkeeper Marshall Aleckel with a deft shot in the 40th minute.

Ganesh Ramugade swelled the margin a minute from the end, slotting in from close range.
