MUMBAI, Aug 20: Student representatives from 27 engineering colleges have pleaded with the Mumbai varsity to revert to the old rule system for promotion into the next semester. In a letter dated August 19, addressed to vice chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh, the representatives have pleaded that the fate of around 2,500 students are in danger of losing an academic year because of the new system introduced this year.``According to the new rule system, if a student has cleared the odd semester of a particular year and has no backlog but has KTs (Keep Term) in more than four heads of the even semester of that particular academic year, he or she loses the year'', explained Nitin Anand, one of the aggrieved students. In the old system, however, a student had to completely clear either one of the two semesters. Even if he or she got KTs in all subjects in one of the semesters of that particular year, he or she would still be promoted into the next year, observed Anand. The students have also requestedunconditional Term Grant ie. allow students having KTs in two semesters in the same year to get promoted into the next year, as has been the case since the last nine years.
Another student Nilesh Patil pointed out that in the old system, along with the provision of term grant, a student could fail in all 18 heads in their Vth and VIth semester exams combined or 16 heads in their IIIrd and IVth semester exams combined and still go the next year, maintained Patil. But in the new system, third year students have to clear at least 14 of the 18 heads to go into the final year. Similarly, second year students have to clear 12 to go into the next year.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Dr Naresh Chandra said ``We are looking into the matter''.
