Ministry nod for Kutch jetty project at last
Damandeep Singh
NEW DELHI, August 20: The ministry of environment and forests (MEF) has finally cleared the Sanghi Industries jetty project in the Kutch after a delay of nearly three years. The matter will now go to the Gujarat High Court where the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is fighting a legal battle against the project. The High Court had directed the ministry to review the project after it quashed MEF's previous order denying permission. It had passed strictures against the former minister, Saifuddin Soz, while also stating that the project site was within reserve forest area. Granting the permission today, Union environment minister Suresh Prabhu told "The Indian Express" that it was done only after the ``due and lengthy consideration and after taking into account all view points''. He said the ministry had constituted an expert committee headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Y.V. Chandrachud. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
