MUMBAI, Aug 20: The no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) against Speaker Gajanan Thakre today was defeated with 123 Councillors voting against it and 64 in its favour. The no-confidence motion was moved to protest Thakre's abrupt adjournment of the House on August 13, ignoring the demands of the Opposition to hold a debate on the Shivshahi Punarvasan Prakalp, the State Government's ambitious scheme to give free houses to the poor.
The motion was put to vote by Deputy Speaker Jaya Goythale, who officiated as Speaker for the special meeting called for the purpose. The voting on the no-confidence motion began after a grueling three-and-a-half-hour debate which saw the ruling combine and the Opposition trading charges.
The Opposition members alleged that the Speaker had been partial. Leader of Opposition, Kisan Jadhav, while supporting the no-confidence motion against Thakre for his attempts ``to stifle the voice of the Opposition,'' described theevent as unfortunate and shameful. Most Opposition members, while speaking highly of Thakre as an individual, came down heavily on his style of functioning, which they said was dictated by Mayor Nandu Satam.
