Money vs medal battle turns into war
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), smarting under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) snub, hit back on Thursday saying that the team will be disqualified, "if there is any further delay in selecting the team and sending the names to the Commonwealth Games Federation." A letter to this effect has also been sent to Raj Singh Dungarpur, president of the BCCI. It also stuck to its earlier stand that the list should only be sent through the IOA. It cannot be sent directly or through the International Cricket Council (ICC), IOA warned.

Ladies' night
France's flame-haired Christine Arron set the European Championships alight here last night winning the women's 100 metres title and breaking the European record on the way to becoming the third fastest performer of all time. On a night when the fairer sex outshone the men, Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan began her attempt to become the first woman to take the 5,000 and 10,000 metres double by winning the longer race.

Leander wins
Indian ace Leander Paes continued his giant killing spree ousting big-hitter Sergi Bruguera of Spain in the second round of the Pilot Pen International in New Heaven. The India's number one player 100, beat the Spaniard in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to cruise to the third round of the tournament.

Majid Khan
The controversy surrounding the appointment of Aamir Sohail as captain of Pakistan cricket team has not yet died down and it is likely to cost the chief executive of the board (PCB), Majid Khan, his job.

Urvashi leads
Players notched up better scores on the second day of the South India amateur ladies Open golf championship in Chennia on Wednesday. Delhi's Anjali Chopra led the way with a par round of 72. The first day's leader Urvashi Sethi Sodhi (73) maintained her overall lead. Not far behind were Anouk Chanmugam (74) of Sri Lanka Parnita Garewal (75) of Chandigarh.

Lanka win
Sri lanka won the tri-series one day tournament when they beat England by five wickets in the final at the Lord's today. Atapattu was the star performer as he slammed an unbeaten 132.
