`Dead' Pole comes back to take gold

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
BUDAPEST, Aug 21: Poland's Pavel Januszewski, who was falsely reported to have been killed in a car crash last November, completed a remarkable comeback when he won the 400 metres hurdles at the European Championships yesterday.

Spain retained the men's 1500 metres title, but through young pretender Reyes Estevez who snatched the crown from defending champion Fermin Cacho, who could finish only third.

Elena Afanaseyeva confirmed herself the best in Europe by cruising to victory in the women's 800 metres final.

The 26-year-old Januszewski, who was in hospital for three weeks with a blood clot on the brain following the accident, shocked favourite Ruslan Maschenko of Russia as he stole up on him at the final hurdle to nail the 400 hurdles title in a new national record of 48.17 seconds.
