RPO sees threat to life, seeks protection

Chandigarh, Aug 21: Regional Passport Officer (RPO) Bhagat Ram has sought police protection following an "alleged threat to his and his family's life and property from a local travel agent".

The RPO, in his complaint to the Sector 39 Station House Officer, reported that Surinder Gupta, proprietor of Quick Service, Sector 34, had come to his house "in a drunken state and threatened" him with dire consequences.

The complainant alleged that the accused along with two or three others came to his house at 2.45 a.m. on Thursday and kept ringing the bell and knocking at the door. "I did not open the door on account of apprehension of an untoward happening. Ultimately, they left saying in Punjabi, `Dar gaya'," Bhagat Ram stated in his complaint.

The passport officer then informed the police about it. "The motive behind the crime committed by Surinder Gupta is the suspension of the licence of his travel agency by me in my official capacity under instructions from the Central government," the FIR states. Bhagat Ram, when contacted, said that Gupta's licence was suspended for two years after he "tried to procure a passport for a person who was already staying abroad". The police have registered a case under Sections 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
