DTC employees protest "assault" by policeman

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 21: Hundreds of Delhi Transport Corporation employees today staged a demonstration in protest against the ``unprovoked assault'' on a colleague by a policeman in an inebriated condition last night.

The incident occurred at a tea stall near the depot. Some DTC employees who were sitting there entered into an argument with the policeman, later identified as Sub-Inspector Ranjit Singh from Kalkaji police station, who was also at the stall. Singh was transferred to police lines with immediate effect today.

He was reportedly in an inebriated condition, when he suddenly started abusing the DTC employees. One of the DTC employees -- a bus driver -- protested, and he was assaulted by Singh.

The bus driver rushed back to the depot and alerted his colleagues who marched towards the tea stall. Singh, however, whipped out his service revolver and threatened the DTC employees.

Fearing that the Singh might shoot at them, the DTC employees dispersed. But they struck work immediately and refused to operate buses leaving from the depot.

Their protest continued this morning. And it was only after senior police officers from south district reached the depot and promised the DTC employees that an inquiry would be made into the incident, and Singh would be transferred, that bus services resumed operations.
