MUMBAI, August 23: The countrywide teachers' indefinite strike received a boost when some of the teaching staff of the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) decided to join the strike recently. The UDCT is an autonomous institute internationally renowned for research work.Some of the UDCT students informed that only half of their regular lectures and practicals were being held, as nearly 50 per cent of their professors were on strike.
Meanwhile, the campaign for intensification of the strike received an overwhelming response from teachers in the city. More than 1,000 teachers from colleges in the zones extending from Byculla to Sion and Mumbai Central to Matunga, took out a huge morcha from Dadar TT to Khalsa College last week.Prominent among the participating colleges were R N Ruia College, SIES, D G Ruparel, Maharashtra College, Kirti, Khalsa, SNDT (Matunga), Burhani and SIWS. A similar morcha was also taken out in Thane from B N Bandodkar college to the district collector's office. Over500 teachers were present during the morcha.
Both morchas were addressed by office-bearers of the Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU) and the SNDT-WUCTU teachers, and also Dr K P Jejurkar, zonal secretary of the AIFCTO (All India Federation of College Teachers Organisations).
