SHIMLA, Aug 23: State Congress president Sat Mahajan's 15-day tour plan of the districts to hold meetings with local units and revitalise the organisational set up, has come as a big morale booster for the partymen, who had been looking for new alternatives within the party after it had lost the power in March last.Although the new PCC executive had not yet been re-constituted, Mahajan has already toured some key districts like Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Shimla to gear up the party machinery for highlighting the failures of the government. His announcement to prepare the party for formation of the government, after disloding the existing one, is also an indication of a long-term plan which Mahajan had already conceived of.
Reports received from the districts reveal that Mahajan's closed door meetings with the DCCs focussed mainly on the strategy to restore confidence among the workers, mass mobilisation against government and coordination among partymen.
``These meetings are turning out to be very useful as we can get feedback from the field about the government's performance and can meet the shortcomings within the organisational set up,'' Mahajan claims.
Though Mahajan tries to play down the fact that he had not been getting the desired support from a powerful section of the party leaders close to former CM Virbhadra Singh, his supporters had already conveyed the same to some Central leaders.
In fact, the tour of Mahajan and his daily interaction with workers in the district had started causing worry in the rival camp. Reports suggest that two senior party leaders from Solan, including a sitting MLA, had even declined to attend a meeting if former CM Virbhadra Singh, who is also CPL leader was present. Mahajan handled the situation by assuring two leaders that he would get a separate meeting convened in their areas for detailed discussions.
Fresh lobbying, to seek replacement of Virbhadra Singh as CLP leader has already started in Delhi. Former CM Ram Lal Thakur, who remains a fore runner in the race for alternative leadership besides Vidya Stokes and Kaul Singh Thakur, had camped in Delhi for a week and met all senior leaders. Virbhadra Singh too had visited Delhi to counter the lobbying. Party insiders say Sonia Gandhi has not yet finally rejected the resignation of Virbhadra Singh, which he had submitted after the party's defeat in the four assembly seats besides Mandi Lok Sabha seat, where his wife Pratibha Singh was the Congress nominee.
