NEW DELHI, August 23: A 14-year-old girl was reportedly strangulated by her father on Saturday in the Dabri police station area in south-west Delhi. Surinder Singh Solanki, an MCD employee, has confessed to the crime. He told the police that he had killed his daughter as she had brought disrepute to the family by eloping with a welder.Meenu, a class VIII student in a Janakpuri school, was reportedly seeing a 24-year-old welder. Gaffar ran a small welding shop near Meenu's Vaishali Colony house. Her parents did not approve of their friendship.
According to the police, Meenu had eloped with Gaffar on May 7. Her parents registered a case of kidnapping as she was a minor. However, the police had not been able to trace her.
Meenu reportedly turned up at her uncle Narender Singh's Dabri village house on Friday morning. According to the police, ``Meenu had come alone. Gaffar had not come along. She had a small bag with her which contained some of her clothes. Her relatives say she appeared disturbed.''
Her uncle is a driver with the Delhi Police. His family members reportedly asked Meenu about Gaffar and her whereabouts these past few months, and whether he had deserted her. But she reportedly refused to divulge anything.
She apparently requested them not to inform her father about her arrival as he was very angry with her. Narender's family claim they did not inform Surinder about Meenu's arrival. They say someone else must have told him that Meenu had come back and was staying at Narender's house.
Surinder went to his house around 2.30 p.m. on Saturday and found Meenu sleeping on a cot. According to the Dabri police, ``Meenu was sleeping with her dupatta around her neck. Surinder used it to strangulate her.'' Other relatives claim that they were not aware of Surinder's entry into their home as they were all taking an afternoon nap. However, Surinder went to the Dabri police station after the act and confessed to having killed his daughter as she had insulted him by eloping with the welder.
He was arrested by the Dabri police. The police is on the look-out for Gaffar who is absconding. Meenu's body has been sent for post-mortem. Her 16-year-old brother Sonu was waiting to receive her body at the hospital today.
