BHOPAL, AUG 25: Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav today said his party could not wait indefinitely for the Congress to take an initiative for bringing about the downfall of the BJP-led government at the Centre.Addressing a press conference at the end of the two-day meeting of the SP national executive here, Yadav said the future course to be adopted by his party in case the Congress failed to take the lead would be decided at its three-day national conference to be held at Jaipur from September 25.
He said all non-BJP political parties had authorised the Congress to lead the campaign for ending the rule of the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre.
There would be no mid-term polls to the Lok Sabha after the fall of the Vajpayee government, the SP chief asserted.
``An alternative government is ready and it will take its place at the appropriate time,'' he said.
Yadav said if the Congress failed to take the first step, the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha would ``go to the people'' to ``highlight the failures of the BJP-led government'' and raise the issues of rising prices, increase in terrorist activities and the shortage of power and drinking water.
He said the response to the rallies of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha at Jaipur, Patna and Ahmedabad proved that the people were ``getting disenchanted'' with the policies of the BJP-led government.
Asked who would be Prime Minister if a Congress-led government was formed at the Centre, he said this would ``have to be decided by the Congress''.
As far as the SP was concerned, Mulayam said, it did not want to bring about the fall of the BJP-led government merely to secure important posts for its leaders.
``There is no question of the SP working against the BJP to get some posts for its own leaders,'' Yadav said.
He reiterated the charge that the Vajpayee government had a hidden agenda which it was ``pursuing vigorously''.
The SP president said the fact that the hidden agenda was there had become clear following statements from BJP leaders that if the party got an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, it would work to introduce a common civil code, repeal Article 370 of the Constitution and other contentious issues.
Grappling with politics
Wrestlers make successful politicians, according to Mulayam Singh Yadav.
A former wrestler himself, Yadav told mediapersons here today that apart from him there were several wrestlers who had ``made good'' in Indian politics.
These included senior Congress leader Sharad Pawar, former defence minister Y B Chavan and late socialist leader Raj Narain, he said.
