NEW YORK, Aug 25: Britain's Greg Rusedski, playing his second event since spraining his left ankle at Wimbledon, beat Sweden's Magnus Norman 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Hamlet Cup.Rusedski advanced to a second-round match against Brazil's Fernando Meligeni, a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3 winner over France's Guillaume Raoux. Defending champion Carlos Moya of Spain and countryman Francisco Clavet also advanced. Moya beat New Zealand's Brett Steven 7-5, 6-3, and Clavet beat Israel's Lior Mor 6-2, 6-1. In other first-round matches, Germany's David Prinosil beat Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, and the Netherlands' Jan Siemerink defeated Spain's Julian Alonso 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Muster advances
BROOKLINE: Thomas Muster defeated Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay 6-0, 6-3 in the first round of the MFS Pro Tennis Championships at Longwood Cricket Club.
Earlier yesterday, Gianluca Pozzi upset sixth-seeded Fabrice Santoro of France, 6-2, 6-2. Third-seeded Cedric Pioline needed only 55 minutes to sweep past Romania's Adrian Voinea, 6-4, 6-0.
In other first-round matches, Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark outlasted Jerome Golmard of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Sebastien Grosjean of France stopped John van Lottum of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-0; and Xavier Malisse of Belgium beat Steve Campbell 6-3, 6-1.
Kournikova up
NEW HAVEN: Russian Anna Kournikova defeated Barbara Schett of Austria 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Pilot Pen tournament. Kournika faces South Africa's Amanda Coetzer in the second round. Coetzer won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 against Magui Serna of Spain. Mary Joe Fernandez won 11 straight games en route to a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory over eighth-seeded Dominique van Roost of Belgium.
