MDMK and PMK step out of "withdrawal" threats

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, August 29: Just two days after AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha announced that her party's support to the BJP-led government was `still under review', her key allies, PMK and MDMK today publicly disassociated from the withdrawal threat.

``We are not happy with the BJP government. Nonetheless, we will not withdraw support even if Jayalalitha decides to pull out of the coalition, as we do not want to fall into the treacherous trap laid by the the Congress'', Ramadoss told a crowded media conference after the party's executive committee meeting here.

Going one step further, MDMK leader Vaiko categorically said: ``As far as MDMK is concerned there is no question of review or going back. We sought the mandate of the people under Vajpayee's stewardship and we will honour the commitment given to the people''.

Vaiko who visited the city BJP office to formally invite State leaders for the September 15 MDMK rally, in an informal chat with media persons, even brushed aside Jayalalitha's constant threat of withdrawal, saying, ``I do not attach any importance to the latest developments''. He made it clear that the party was committed to an `unconditional support' to the BJP-led government. ``We have never wavered...I never made any statement which has created confusion,'' he said.

Both leaders, who in all have seven MPs in their fold, categorically stated that they would have ``no truck'' with the Congress. Ramadoss vehemently said that the PMK would not support the Congress which had ``ruined the country for the last 45 years''.
