Man cremates son after 10-year quest for justice
CHERTHALA (Kerala), Sept 1: Thankappan, a septuagenarian, has at last cremated his son Gopi, who died in 1988 at the age of 21 in police custody. Thankappan had kept Gopi's body in a concrete tank filled with formalin in the front yard of his house here, while he fought for justice. Various Governments came to power, and the media reported the bizzare quest for justice. Thankappan resisted all pleas to cremate the body till yesterday. He gave in after tasting partial victory - the Kerala High Court has ordered a CBI probe into the incident as well as a departmental enquiry, besides awarding a compensation of Rs 3 lakh. Gopi's last rites were performed in the presence of a crowd of local people, media personnel and human rights activists.Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
