MUMBAI, September 3: The Commissioner of Police, Ronald Mendonca, today informed that the police has still not come to any definite conclusion over the recent death of the 16-year-old girl student of Sophia College, Indu Anto.Commenting on one newspaper report that stated that Indu was tortured four to five days before she committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of the girls hostel of Sophia College, the commissioner said on Thursday, ``The newspaper's report is based on the post-mortem of the body; however, without going into the conclusions arrived at by the newspaper, I would only say that the police investigations are still on in this matter.'' However, the family members of the girl have been alleging since day one that Indu was driven to commit suicide due to ragging by some of the senior hostel girls. Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde had recently transferred the case from the local police station to the state CID.
However, a junior police official stated that in her personal diary seizedfrom her hostel room after her death, Indu has made no mention about ragging. ``Indu has only stated in her diary that she was not happy with her academic performance,'' said the official. In a written statement today, the principal of Sophia College, Dr Jeanette Pinto, said: ``We have not got the post-mortem report. But we have once again made our investigations upon coming across the statements made in the newspapers, and we do not find that the injuries as reportedly sustained by Ms Indu Anto have occurred in Sophia College Hostel premises.''
The principal has further stated that Indu's stay in the hostel was of only 20 days' duration, during which period she spent three days at her parental home. During the remaining days, claims Dr Pinto, her parents came to see her at least 3 or 4 times, and her maid came on a number of occasions.
