Law and order panel proposed

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, September 3: The Centre today informed the Delhi High Court that it would soon constitute a high-level committee to discuss the issue of law and order in the Capital and suggest modalities for modernisation of police force and implementation of various recommendations.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) C.S Vaidyanathan told a division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Mahinder Narain and Justice Mukul Mudgal that the committee would comprise officials from the home and finance ministries and the Delhi Police.

He said the report of the committee would be placed before the court on the next date of hearing, fixed for October 7.

The bench, hearing a public interest writ on the deteriorating law and order in the Capital, especially in the light of the recent spurt in crime, expressed dissatisfaction at the affidavit filed by the Delhi Police yesterday.

Describing the affidavit as "scanty", the bench said it gave an impression that police wanted to maintain status quo while there should be an attempt to improve the system.
