Lessons never learnt
If a fraction of the extraordinary urgency that the government displayed in rushing through with the Prasar Bharati ordinance could have been demonstrated in passing the Constitution (83rd Amendment) Bill, 1997 -- which seeks to make primary education a fundamental right -- it would have been a cause for celebration.

Protests at Durban
The Prime Minister was ill-advised on how to respond to Nelson Mandela at Durban. Mandela has made no secret of his views on India's nuclear tests or his concern about the Kashmir question.

The two-team theory
The latest row to rock Indian cricket has been officially declared resolved, but the answer found to the problem involved has only raised further and more important posers. The teams have at last been named for the coming tournaments in Toronto and Kuala Lumpur, but the announcement only leaves people asking bewildered questions.
