Swissair plane crash kills 229
All 229 passengers and crew on board a Swissair plane were killed yesterday when it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the Canadian coast while attempting an emergency landing. The MD11 jet en route from New York to Geneva with 215 passengers, including two infants and 14 crew, on board was trying to land at Halifax airport when it crashed off the southern coast of Nova Scotia.

PM raps Mandela meddling
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was forced to make last-minute changes in his address to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit yesteerday to express condemnation of South African President Nelson Mandela's provocation of sorts with a reference to the Kashmir issue. Vajpayee firmly rejected third-party mediation in Kashmir issue and bluntly told Mandela that his suggestions in this regard were "uncalled for and unacceptable''.

Jethmalani writes to Vajpayee on `impertinent' Secy issue
Union Minister for Urban Development Ram Jethmalani will take up the issue of "insolent and impertinent'' bureaucrats with the Prime Minister. Apart from the bureaucrats mentioned in his earlier letter to the Prime Minister protesting against the CVC Ordinance, Jethmalani also intends to take up the issue of the transfer of Secretary, Urban Development, Kiran Aggarwal.
