St Paul sneak into semis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, September 6: St Paul's (Dadar) defeated Udayachal by a solitary goal to enter the under-12 III semi-finals of the Inter-School football championship, sponsored by Colgate Palmolive, at the MSSA-Castrol Schools Sports Centre, Azad maidan, today.

Udayachal, who turned up with just 11 players, had the better share of the exchanges on the murky surface. However, they failed to create any chances as they ran out of ideas upon reaching the rival box.

St Paul's found their bearings in the second half. Their forwards combined well and they received good support from their midfielders. As such they pinned their rivals to their own territory and did not relax until they scored the match-winner midway through the half.

The goal-getter was Hemant Waghela. He neatly beat two defenders in the box and then scored with a neat placement.Earlier, Dominic Savio (Andheri) also made the under-12 III semi-final grade when they beat Victoria (Mahim) 1-0. They now take on St Paul's in the semi-final clash.

DominicSavio impressed with their all-round display and were deserving winners. The all-important goal was scored by their consistent goal-getter Elton Pinto.

Mathaias Countinho, who had scored when Holy Family (Andheri) beat St Francis D'Assisi in their previous encounter, once again stole the limelight when his goal today helped his team to beat St Mary's SSC 1-0 in the under-12 I semis.

In the lone girls match, St Augustine (Nerul), playing for the second consecutive day, defeated Scholar 2-0 in Under-16 C section.

Nisha Mehta and consistent goal-getter Sonia Kapoor scored in that order.
