GENEVA, September 6: The black box (flight data recorder) of the doomed Swissair flight 111 which crashed off the Canadian-Atlantic coast, killing all 229 people on board, could be recovered later today, Swissair said. The box has been located at a depth of 60 metres in the Atlantic Ocean, SAIR group president Philippe Bruggisser said on Sunday. He said: ``It should be recovered sometime during Sunday.''
A submarine located the beacon that the black box emits yesterday. The box should contain flight data and conversations in the cockpit in the run-up to the tragedy late on Wednesday. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
According to an earlier report from Halifax, Canada, on Saturday, Sergeant Andre Guertin, spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) which is masterminding the overall search, said that there were nearly 30 vessels conducting the search for wreckage and human remains from the plane while Army personnel comb the shoreline around Peggy's Cove and neighbouringislands for debris that may have been washed up.
