Mobile cancer hospital
Press Trust of India
MUMBAI, September 6: The USA-based Nargis Dutt foundation is all set to introduce India's first mobile cancer hospital in Mumbai by the year-end.Custom-built by Siemens India at a projected cost of US dollars 2,50,000, the mobile hospital would cater to half of the city's population which lives in slums, Sunil Dutt, trustee of the foundation, said. Mounted on a truck chassis, the hospital will be equipped with X-ray and cancer diagnosis machines in addition to all facilities and medical equipment for treating minor ailments. The hospital will initially operate only on weekends because doctors manning it will be working free of charge. Each weekend, the hospital will be parked in a different designated slum area of Mumbai and will offer free medical check-ups, diagnosis and medication to the poor in that area. The hospital is donated by California, Vancouver and San Francisco chapters of the Nargis Dutt Foundation. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
