SURAT, Sept 6: Five people from the district drowned, one was murdered, a boat overturned in the Tapi and another 17 injured in the city, when a tempo carriage gave way during a procession in the city, even as more than 20,000 Ganesh idols were immersed in the region on Saturday and the early hours of Sunday.According to the district police, five people were reported drowned in the Kamrej, Bardoli and Mandvi police station areas of the district, while two died in different villages of Kamrej and Bardoli talukas. One person died in Bardoli taluka, the district rural police control room said.
According to the Athwa Lines police, one Manoj Bansilal Kharwa was beaten to death by a group of youths on Saturday. The cause of the attack was playing of drums, to which some youths of the same mohalla in Rudarpura objected. In another case near Sarita Sankul, a boat carrying a Ganesh idol in the Tapi river overturned. However, none of the four occupants were injured, the police said.
Another 17 were injured when the wooden framework of a tempo carrying processionists in the Salabatpura area of the city collapsed. No person was seriously injured, the Salabatpura police said.
Meanwhile, thousands of Ganesh idols were immersed at Navdi Ovaaro, Dakka Ovaro, Magdalla, Umra, Amroli, Sardar Bridge and other areas of the city with the Rajmarg remaining blocked with the processionists until early on Sunday morning. While cranes were used to lower the large idols into the Tapi from the Sardar bridge, people waded into the river to immerse the smaller idols. And with the Rajmarg being blocked by processionists, there were complaints of the procession being reduced to a snail's pace. It took more than five hours to cover a distance of one km on the Rajmarg.
All talukas of the district, including Valsad, Navsari and Dangs, and the union territories reported immersion of idols.
