One two ka sor two's company

Mike Kalyaniwala
Mike Kalyaniwala joins 2Unlimited's Romy and Marion for a quiet chat and makes it a three's company

The first thing that most people are likely say after reading the intro is ``Romy and who? Where're those Anita and Rapper Ray who gave us such massive hits such as No Limits and Tribal Dance?''

Well, the answer is they've left. After five long years of being in the group, both decided that it was time for them to move on to solo careers. And that is how we are interviewing the two who have taken over from them, Romy Van Oosten and Marion Van Iwaarden. For purposes of identification we shall call them the Blonde (R) and the Brunette (M) respectively.

Kis khet ki mooli? Both of 'em are from the khets of Holland. They met at the auditions for 2U. But, while the blonde is a former model, the brunette was a book-keeper who also sang with jazz and pop groups. And Romy is trained in classical singing.

What styles of music have you'll been influenced by?

R: ``Mainly Soul,R&B, a little drum and bass...''

M: ``I used to sing with Jazz and pop groups and all my main influences are from there. Anyway, I also listen to western classical.''

Ironically, no one mentions techno.

So, what is your music gonna be like?

R: ``You'll hear a lot of pop, R&B, soul, drum and bass..''

M: ``We're gonna be totally different from what Anita and Ray did. But, we don't think people will be affected by it. There are lot of groups who've changed band members and still have maintained their audiences.''

From Russia With...

R: ``We won't forget Russia. We were touring and it was so cold, that we couldn't get out of the plane 'coz the door got stuck. Even the aircraft wasn't very... safe!

M: ``And we had to drive around in a very cramped van, and once, we even peed in the snow.''

Well, what are your other hobbies?

R: ``I like horse-riding, animals (she's got three dogs and two cats), reading...''

M: ``Cycling, reading. (Thinks) Both of us aren't really outdoor people, wealways like to stay indoors. The only thing we do outdoors is shopping.''

Tera Bharat Mahan

Romy's already been to India before. She's been to Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. She believes the Taj Mahal `is absolutely fabulous. India is a truly inspirational country.''

Have you heard Indian music?

``Yes.'' Where? ``In a taxi,'' retorts Romy giggling. And, what do you think about it?

R: ``It's very spiritual!''

Uh-huh? The cab driver must've been Ravi Shankar.

Celeb status

R: ``Everything has changed after 2 Unlimited. Now, somebody makes the schedule for us. We follow a set pattern.''

M: ``But, people back home are not all that star struck. They are like `well, so what if you're stars?' Nobody bothers.''

It takes two to tango

It that bounced over your head, we mean their love lives.

Romy has got none. ``I'm looking out for an Indian guy. But, of course, he would have to go down on his knees...'' Do you hear that men? And she actually means it too!

The brunette, though, isnot the Marion' kind. ``I think I'll wait.''

What more can we say?

Future tense?

``No, not at all. We hope to do this for a long time. And we hope our audiences like it.''

Message:

R: ``Keep free of drugs and enjoy life.''

M: ``Always have safe sex...''
