CHENNAI, Sept 7: All India Anna DMK (AIADMK) General Secretary J Jayalalitha today lambasted the media for spreading, what she termed as ``canard'' against her and asserted that she would not worry about it as the people were with her.In a lengthy appeal to the AIADMK cadres, she said certain newspapers and journals which had been spreading ``canard'' against her ever since she entered the politics, were ``running amok'' against her now. The people had given her the vigour to confront all hostile designs, she added.
In an apparent reference to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who normally enjoys a friendly press, she said some people were dependent on newspapers and satellite television channels owned by them for their survival in power.
``But we are dependent only on the people. When that great force is with us, we need not worry about the evil-minded who spread canard,'' she added.
Jayalalitha said the public meeting, organised by the AIADMK atTiruchiralli on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of late chief minister C N Annadurai would turn out to be a success.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister A b Vajpayee is scheduled to attend a rally, organised by the Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK), an ally of the AIADMK, in the city on the same day.
The media had interpreted the AIADMK organising a parallel rally at Tiruchirapalli as a clever attempt by Jayalalitha to stay away from the MDMK function.
Meanwhile, P Anbazhagan, Special Judge-III, trying cases of corruption during the previous AIADMK regime today, adjourned to September 15, further hearing in the case relating to the purchase of the state-owned Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) land at Guindy here by Jaya Publications and Sasi Enterprises, promoted by Jayalalitha and her close aide Sasikala Natarajan.
The two, along with former state rural industries minister Mohammed Asif, former TANSI chairman T R Srinivasan, former deputy director (stamps) R Nagarajan and former IASofficial R Karpoora Sundarapandian, have been named as accused in the case relating to the purchase of the TANSI land by the two firms at a cheap rate, thus causing a loss of Rs 3.51 crore to the state exchequer.
The judge also adjourned, to October 12, the case relating to the purchase of part of the TANSI land by R R Industries promoted by Sasikala. Srinivasan, Sundarapandian, Jameel Pasha and Ravi, who have been named as accused in this case, were present in the court when the case came up for hearing.
