CHANDIGARH, Sept 7: Akali Dal (Amritsar) Chief Simranjit Singh Mann today alleged that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were behind the public interest litigation filed against the People's Commission.Addressing a news conference here, Mann pointed out the Commission had been set up by the human rights organisations in accordance with the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, to which India is a signatory.
Mann said the finding of the Commission might not be binding on the state but would have strong persuasive and moral value. Such commissions were appointed to expose the war crimes of the Nazis. Then there are the examples of Truth Commission in South Africa and several other countries including Argentina, Rwanda and Yugoslavia.
He said the human rights organisations took the initiative as the ruling Akali Dal failed to fulfill its poll promise of setting up such a commission.
Mann favoured to end thealliance between the ruling Akali Dal and the BJP on the issue of the People's Commission and Udham Singh Nagar issue. He said the next government could take action on the basis of the recommendations made by the People's Commission. Mann, whose party has a lone member in the present Vidhan Sabha, was confident that his party would form the next government in the State.
He made it clear he did not have any expectations from the Badal government. ``I wish Badal could run the state'', he said, adding, that Badal was under pressure from both BJP and police.
