Paid parking deadlock continues

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Sept 7: The issue of paid parking in Sector 17 continued to reverberate even on the seventh day today as traders, employees and political parties stalled its implementation. Meanwhile, hectic negotiations and meetings continued throughout the day, as BJP councillors reiterated its early implementation.

Traders, employees and various political parties, including the Congress, SJP, CPI, CPM, Samajwadi Party and Janata Party, besides others, assembled in Sector 17 right from the morning and did not allow the introduction of paid parking there. They also staged a dharna and delivered speeches.

They later deliberated on the issue and sent a memorandum to the local MP Satya Pal Jain calling upon him to come forward and resolve the issue of paid parking. They called upon him to make his position clear before the public on the issue and help stall the additional burden of paid parking introduced by the BJP-led MC.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal later got together and met Mayor Gian Chand Gupta. While they were seeking the stalling of the tax, their demand for exempting any fee on entry to Sector 17 was accepted as only those vehicle-owners would have to pay paid parking who park their vehicles in Sector 17. Their demand for introducing paid parking at the back of shops, however, could not find favour with the mayor.

A memorandum was also presented by the delegation headed by Beopar Mandal president Inder Lal Batra.

Later, the mayor met the Adviser and other UT officials, who also reiterated that paid parking should be introduced in Sector 17. The municipal councillors of BJP also reiterated their stand to implement paid parking in the sector at the earliest.

Prominent among those present during the agitation were SJP president, Devinder Singh Babla, SP president, Shivi Jaiswal, Traders' Association leaders Subhash Kataria, Jagdishpal Singh Kalra, Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, councillor Raj Kumar Goel, besides employees' leaders.
