CHANDIGARH, Sept 7: The Government Teachers Union (GTU), which spear-headed last week's strike following the suspension of three teachers in the Pinky suicide case and called it off on Sunday after an appeal from the UT Administration, split today. In an emergency meeting today under the chairmanship of Jaspal Singh Tiwana, who is also the advisor of the Government Teachers Union, the new faction unanimously decided to expel the six teachers who had agreed to suspend the agitation and resume teaching work from today.
The members of the new faction alleged that these teachers had misled the teaching community for their vested interests. It claimed that they did not take the approval of the high-power 31-member committee before suspending the agitation in response to the Administration's appeal.
Tiwana said that the future course of action in this regard would be discussed at the general house meeting of the union on September 14 to be held in Sector 35. The expulsion of these leaders will also be approved there. He also criticised these leaders for appealing to the Administration to confer this year's State Awards even as they had decided to boycott the Teacher's Day function.
The government school teachers who were protesting the suspension of three teachers of GHS, Sector 38, in connection with the Pinky suicide case had abstained from teaching work on Friday and Saturday and had decided to go on an indefinite strike till their demands were met. But the union leaders including Harbir Singh Anand, Ram Dev Shastri and Vinod Sharma, who met the Education Secretary yesterday decided to suspend the agitation for the "time being" in the interest of students.
While teachers attended their respective schools and students also took their September examination today, resentment prevailed among teachers against their leaders for "calling off" the agitation.
