JALANDHAR, Sept 7: A number of Sikh labourers, who went to Libya for jobs were detained by the Libyan police and asked to withdraw their complaints against a Delhi-based labour recruitment firm which has its operations in Tripoli.Some of the workers, who have returned here, told PTI that 10 of their colleagues were detained by the Libyan police on the charges of sabotage.
Fifteen Sikh workers, who were detained, along with other workers from Punjab, Delhi and Hyderabad, were subjected to atrocities hurting their religious sentiments, alleged Manjit Singh of Salwara village near here who managed to return.The affected workers have urged Jathedar of Akal Takht Bhai Ranjit Singh to summon the proprietors and officials of the labour recruiting firm and ask to explain their conduct, Sohan Lal Chauhan, president of the NRI Welfare.
Committee urged the jathedar through a letter. Chauhan said the External Affairs Ministry had also written to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee urging him to expedite the process for release of jailed workers.
The NRI Welfare Society demanded that the Centre and state government should blacklist the company and order a probe.
