NEW DELHI, Sept 7: Four unidentified men attacked a security policeman posted outside writer Khushwant Singh's Sujan Singh Park flat at around 3 in the morning. The assailants, armed with long knives, threatened to stab him if he raised an alarm and escaped with his loaded pistol and the money in his pockets.Kushwant Singh slept through the incident. He told Express Newsline, ``I was fast asleep at the time. I was shocked when I came to know of the incident. The first thing I asked my security man was whether the assailants were sardars.
But apparently they were not. Since the 1984 riots, I have been put under Z-category security. Though the number of policemen guarding my house have decreased with time, there is at least one to guard the entrance to my flat.'' He added: ``Police officers have been visiting since morning. They believe the assailants belong to a particular gang operating in south Delhi who target policemen and rob their pistols.'' There have been seven attacks on policemen in the past one-and-half months.
In all the cases, the assailant(s) robbed the policemen of their pistols. Though the police have picked up definite clues, they have been unable to arrest the accused. Most of their attacks have been around R.K. Puram. Senior officials have said that the accused nurses a grudge against the police and is therefore targeting them. This line of investigation, perhaps, explains why the assailants did not enter Khushwant Singh's flat.
