Doctor held for fraud of Rs 1.5 cr

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 7: A former Safdarjung Hospital doctor who allegedly duped several people of Rs 1.5 crore was arrested in Vasant Vihar yesterday.

Dr Chandra Shekhar opened the `Imperial Co-operative Bank' in '96 with the help of his wife Anita Singh and a close friend. The doctor got his bank approved by PNB by allegedly forging Reserve Bank of India (RBI) letterheads, and even employed 12 people.

When the RBI found out that the bank was bogus, the doctor and his associates went underground in February. Anita was arrested. The police failed to trace him for a year. Last week, a taxi driver informed the police that he had seen him in Vasant Kunj. The police arrested Chandra Shekhar from a servant quarter after maintaining a vigil in the area for a week.
