MNCs behind dropsy cases

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Sept 7: The controversy over edible oil adulteration was given a further twist as Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), a Sangh Parivar outfit, said it suspected certain multinational corporations (MNCs) behind the string of dropsy cases across the country.

SJM organising secretary P Muralidhar Rao while unfolding plans to take out awareness rallies called `Swadeshi Chetna Yatras' in Gujarat next month, told reporters here on Monday that the SJM had asked the Centre to probe into the dropsy cases from the angle of economic terrorism unleashed by MNCs on domestic producers `to demoralise and malign them'. He said the government did nothing more than reacting in panic to tackle the situation as it did not possess any expertise to deal with MNC terrorism.

Rao said measures like restrictions on sale of loose edible oils would not only discourage local players and create upheaval in the domestic markets but also increase dependence on imports, thus directly benefitting certain multinational corporations. He suspected that there was a conspiracy to export genetically engineered seeds to India which might have genes of cow or pig to cause ethical and religious problems.

Stating the objective of the rallies which would be taken out in two phases during September 17 to October 2 and October 2 to 10, he said attempt would be made to build a `debt-free, employed and capable India' through the Swadeshi route. The rallies in Gujarat would start from Porbandar and Navsari on October 2 and will culminate at Gandhi Ashram here, according to SJM's Gujarat coordinator Rasik Mehta.
