Gas tragedy bonanza
One man's tragedy is another man's reward. Within weeks of the killer gas -- methyl isocyanate leaking out of the Bhopal unit of the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) on the night of December 2, 1984, Bhopal was visited by vultures of every kind. Among them were lawyers from the west hoping to cash in on an unprecedented tragedy affecting several thousand people.

Fraternal interests
The ordinance promulgated by the government to bring into existence the office of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner has taken a lot of heat in the past few days, some well-deserved, some not. It has already been argued in these columns that the return of the so-called single-point directive, under which the CBI must seek the CVC's permission before probing senior officials, is a good thing.

Ending the `parkati' problem
With the Congress at Pachmarhi having resiled from support to the Constitution (84th Amendment) Bill "as it is'' to "passage with the broad-based support of all political parties'', the Geeta Mukherjee Committee formula of one-third reservation of seats for women has been virtually given a burial.
