Naik man held in Sena leader's murder

  • In a major breakthrough, the key shooter in the killing of a Shiv Sena corporator near Currey Road station early this year was arrested today.

    Vilas Baliram Vaidya alias Kolya (26), a member of the Ashwin Naik gang, was arrested from a hideout in cental Mumbai early this morning, according to police sources. Two foreign-made revolvers with 25 live cartridges were recovered from him.

    During interrogation Vaidya confessed to killing Sena corporator Kedari Redkar on March 10, 1998. The police however have withheld the names of his associates involved in the murder.

    Redkar was shot dead while driving in a car to his office near Currey Road station, under the jurisdiction of N M Joshi Marg police station. He was declared dead before admission to KEM Hospital.

    In another incident, a special squad attached to unit-6 of the Crime Branch arrested three gangsters and recovered a cache of arms last week. Acting on a tip-off the police laid a trap and nabbedone Rajesh Ishwarlal Yadav near Ganga Hotel close Bhandup Sonapur on September 4. Yadav was to deliver arms to gangsters.

    The police recovered a black Mauser, a 7.63 mm calibre military auto pistol and 10 live cartridges. During interrogation Yadav revealed that his associates Uday Deju Shetty and Manoj Mairam Ghate were to meet near Hotel Shipa at Mulund for delivering arms to some other gangsters. Later, Shetty and Ghate, wanted in connection with serious offences, were trapped near the hotel.

    One dies as boulders crash

  • One person was killed when boulders fell on a hut being built at Sakinaka this morning. Raju (30) was building his hut on the side of a hillock at around 11.30 am when the boulders rolled down. He was killed instantly.

    Global award for Sukarno's kin

  • Megawati Sukarno, daughter of Sukarno, former President of Indonesia, and chairperson of Indonesia Democratic Party, will visit Mumbai to receive an international award by Priyadarshni Academy, a non-profitsocio-cultural organisation. Megawati has been chosen for the Global Award for Outstanding Contribution to International Understanding. Other winners include Tsvi-Tsur from Israel, president of Plasto Gvat, a group which is engaged in marketing and manufacture of irrigation products.
